Strong jaw, clear corners
Square face shape
A jaw that holds its width all the way down.
A square face is defined by the jaw. The forehead, cheekbones and jaw are close in width, and the jaw turns a corner near the ear instead of curving away. The face is usually a little longer than it is wide, but not by much.
The strength of a square face is its structure. Styling can either soften the corners or lean into them, and both are legitimate. What tends to look unbalanced is adding more width at the jaw without adding length.

Recognize it
What makes a square face
- The forehead, cheeks and jaw are similar in width.
- There is a visible corner where the jaw meets the ear.
- The chin is broad rather than pointed.
- The face reads structured even when the cheeks are full.
How the measurement works
Our classifier reads square when the jaw is at least about 94 percent of the cheekbone width on a face that is not long. That is the difference from a round face, where the jaw stays wide but the corners are soft, and from a triangle, where the jaw is actually the widest part of the face.
Hair that softens or sharpens
Soft waves and layers that start at the jaw corner take the edge off. A bob that ends below the jaw with rounded ends works well. If you want to lean into the structure, a blunt cut and a deep side part look deliberate rather than heavy. Avoid a style that is wide and flat at the jaw with no height, which squares the face further.
Frames that curve
Round, oval and rimless frames give the eye a curve to rest on. A frame that is narrower than the jaw also stops the glasses from repeating the face's widest line. Strong rectangular frames can work, but choose a softer corner and a thinner rim than you might on a round face.

Questions
Square face questions
Is a square face the same as a rectangle face?
They are close. A rectangle face is longer, usually above about 1.4 times as long as it is wide, while a square face is shorter and reads more compact. Our tool uses oblong for the long version.
Which haircut suits a square face best?
A cut with soft layers around the jaw and some length below the chin. Waves help. Very short, flat sides with a wide top can make the jaw look even stronger.
Do square faces suit bangs?
Yes, especially soft or side-swept bangs. Heavy, straight bangs across the forehead add a horizontal line that can make the face look wider.
Which glasses soften a square jaw?
Round, oval and rimless frames, or a cat-eye with a gentle curve. Keep the frame width close to the jaw width so the glasses do not look small.
Can a square face wear a beard?
Yes. A beard with a rounded lower edge softens the jaw, while a sharply squared beard emphasises it. Both are valid; pick the effect you want.
