Soft curves, short length

Round face shape

Short, full and soft at the corners.

A round face is close to as wide as it is long. The cheekbones are the widest point, the jaw curves gently into the chin, and there is usually a soft fullness at the cheeks rather than a hard angle.

The styling goal is definition, not disguise. A little vertical line or a sharper corner gives the face structure, while round shapes on top of round shapes make it read fuller than it is.

What makes a round face

  • The face is nearly as wide as it is long.
  • The widest point is the cheekbone, and the jaw stays comparatively wide.
  • The jaw corners are rounded rather than square.
  • Full cheeks are common, even at a low body weight.

How the measurement works

A round reading comes from a short face and a jaw that stays wide. Our classifier reads round when the length to width ratio is under about 1.2 and the jaw is not square enough to trigger the square rule. That second condition is why a short face with a hard jaw corner is read as square instead.

Hair that adds a vertical line

Length below the chin is the simplest way to change the proportion. A lob that ends about an inch under the jaw, a long layered cut, or a pixie with volume on top all give the face more vertical line. Side-swept or curtain bangs break the width of the forehead. Heavy, round bangs that stop at the cheekbone tend to add width exactly where the face is already widest.

Frames with a corner

Angular frames do the work that a haircut cannot: a rectangle, a soft cat-eye, a wayfarer or a geometric frame adds a corner near the eye line and makes the cheekbone look more defined. Round frames are not forbidden, but they repeat the face's own shape, so the effect is softer and rounder.

Questions

Round face questions

How do I tell a round face from a square face?

Look at the jaw corners. A square face has a visible corner where the jaw turns toward the ear; a round face curves through that point. If you are between the two, our tool reports both the reading and the closest alternative.

Does a round face suit short hair?

Yes, if the cut has height on top and some length at the sides. A very short, flat crop can make the face look wider. A textured pixie with volume at the crown is usually the safest short option.

Which glasses should a round face avoid?

Small round frames and very narrow ovals. They repeat the face shape and can make the cheeks look fuller. If you love round frames, choose an oversized pair with a strong top bar for contrast.

Can a round face wear a middle part?

A center part can work with long layers, but a side part usually gives more definition because it creates a diagonal line across the forehead.

Is a round face only about weight?

No. Bone structure decides the shape. A round face can belong to a person of any weight, and the measurement looks at the jaw and cheekbones, not at fullness.
