Square face, beard guide
Beard shapes for a square face
A square face already has a strong jaw, so a beard can either soften it or make a feature of it. A rounded lower edge softens; a sharply squared beard emphasises.
Most people get a more balanced result by rounding the bottom of the beard and keeping the sides tidy, so the jaw line stays visible but less hard.

What works, and where it sits
A square face needs softness, not more corners. A rounded beard or a circle beard changes the outline without hiding the structure that makes the face distinctive.
- 1
Rounded full beard
A full beard with a rounded bottom edge follows the jaw and takes the hard corner off it. Keep the sides trimmed so the beard does not add width.
- 2
Short beard with a soft jaw line
A short beard that follows the jaw with a soft lower edge is the easiest option. It adds texture without changing the shape much.
- 3
Circle beard
A circle beard around the mouth leaves the jaw corners clean and draws attention to the center of the face. It softens a square jaw rather than repeating it.
- 4
Van dyke
A mustache with a separate chin beard leaves the jaw line visible and narrows the chin. It works well on a square face that wants a lighter look.
- 5
Stubble with soft edges
Heavy stubble with a softened cheek line adds texture without a hard edge. Keep the neck line clean so the jaw stays defined.

What works against it
None of these is a rule. They are the choices that tend to undo the balance the rest of the page builds.
A sharply squared boxed beard
It adds a second square edge to a jaw that is already square. Round the bottom instead.
A wide full beard
Width at the sides makes a square face look wider. Keep the beard close to the jaw.
Questions
Questions about beards
What beard suits a square face?
A rounded full beard or a short beard with a soft jaw line. Both soften the jaw without adding width.
Should a square face keep a sharp beard line?
A clean neck line is good, but a sharply squared lower edge repeats the jaw. Round the bottom slightly.
Does a beard make a square face look wider?
Only if it is wide at the sides. Keep the beard close to the jaw and the width stays the same.
